5 Travel Essentials for Maintaining Oral Health

Do you have a getaway from Toronto planned during the rest of the Summer? If so, you’re probably pondering what to take with you to ensure your dental health is at its best. After all, just because you’ve put on your OOO doesn’t mean you should hit pause on good oral health care practices!

Whether you're traveling to a cottage, exclusive resort, or family-friendly rental, maintaining your oral health shouldn't be considered a chore. Instead, look at it as a way to up your self-care game.

“I always urge people to dig into their routines while away,” says Dr. Andrea Gelinas, our Studio’s founder and Doctor of Dental Surgery. “Plus I love the idea of being relaxed and taking care of yourself while on vacation. You're already prioritizing eating well, sleeping, being slow and more mindful; let's also add a few extra minutes to spend on your oral health.”

So, don't be that person who forgets their toothpaste while traveling – instead, plan ahead and pick products that will provide optimal results and, in some cases, even protect your teeth from ingredients like SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate). Below are five oral care products selected by Dr. Gelinas to take on your upcoming adventure near or far; and great news – they’re all available for purchase at our Studio, too!

PHILIPS Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4700 Sonic Electric Toothbrush

In addition to having the ability to remove more plaque than a regular toothbrush (and contributing to less plastic waste ending up in the environment), most electric toothbrushes have portable chargers and travel cases. That said, when an electric toothbrush is fully charged it should also last 2-3 weeks without running out of juice!

Dr. Tung's Smart Floss and Tongue Cleaner

“We all want to make time for self-care while we're vacationing,” Dr. Gelinas notes. “And it's a great opportunity to incorporate flossing into your routine. Nighttime is the optimal time to floss, but you can also take advantage of slower mornings while on vacation to turn flossing into a habit. And it should take no more than one minute to do!” Additionally, she adds that “tongue scraping is a fast way to remove extra particles — including the ones that cause bad breath — from the surface of your tongue.”

Before Toothpaste

“This product is especially great for those traveling somewhere without fluoride in the water system,” says Dr. Gelinas. “This toothpaste has no SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), which can remove the protective layer of mucin on our teeth, but it does still have fluoride in it, meaning your teeth will be protected while you're away.”

Stimmie Reusable Toothpick

Going to a new destination typically means enjoying wonderful meals, and Dr. Gelinas is obsessed with this handy toothpick-meets-gum pick product that's perfect for a quick tooth touch-up after you dine. “Just put them in your pocket or purse and go!”

After your vacation, don’t forget to book a visit to the Studio for an oral exam and cleaning – or maybe a tooth whitening treatment or tooth gem glow-up?
