TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

Tooth Extractions: A Comfortable Goodbye

Sometimes a tooth needs to go—whether it’s irreparably damaged, or an impacted wisdom tooth. At Gelinas Dental Studio, we understand this can be a big decision and we are dedicated to ensuring the process is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Why Tooth Extractions May Be Necessary

Teeth are extracted for a variety of reasons:

  • Severe Decay: When a tooth can’t be salvaged.

  • Advanced Gum Disease: Infections that compromise the tooth’s support structure.

  • Damage or Breakage: Irreparable cracks or fractures.

  • Poor Positioning: Impacted or misaligned teeth.

  • Orthodontic Preparation: Creating room to realign the remaining teeth.

Losing just one tooth can affect how you chew, the alignment of your bite, and even your jaw joint. Our team will discuss alternative treatments before recommending an extraction, and review replacement options to keep your smile healthy and functional.

What to Expect During A Tooth Extraction

1. Local Anesthesia
The dentist numbs the tooth, surrounding gums, and jawbone. You’ll feel pressure but should experience little to no pain thanks to the anesthetic blocking pain signals.

2. Tooth Removal
You may notice a firm rocking motion as the dentist widens the socket for removal. While anesthetics block pain, you might still sense pressure since those nerves aren’t as affected by numbing agents.

Post-Operative Instructions

1. Blood Clot Formation
A blood clot must form to stop bleeding and promote healing. We’ll have you bite on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes right after the extraction. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and keep applying pressure. Repeat until the bleeding subsides.

2. Protect the Clot
Certain activities can dislodge or dissolve the clot, slowing your recovery. Avoid the following for at least 72 hours:

    • No vigorous rinsing

    • No straw use

    • No smoking

    • No alcohol

    • No chewing on the extraction side

    • Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours to minimize bleeding

After Your Appointment

Managing Pain and Swelling
You may experience soreness and swelling. Applying a cold compress or using a bag of frozen peas can reduce inflammation. Take pain relief medication as prescribed. Swelling usually eases after 48 hours.

Diet & Fluids
Stay hydrated and stick to soft, nutritious foods on the day of your extraction. You can gradually return to your normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable.

Oral Care
Resume your regular brushing and flossing routine the day after the extraction to promote healing and to keep your mouth clean. Remember to be gentle around the extraction site!

Most patients feel back-to-normal within a few days of their extraction. If you have any concerns or the pain seems to worsen, contact Gelinas Dental Studio for guidance. We’re committed to helping you heal quickly and maintain a healthy, confident smile.
